When Sandra Allen was in grad school, her uncle Bob sent her his manuscript—yellowed, reeking of cigarettes, written in ALL CAPS. Just blocks of text on each page. What Sandra has done, sensitively and deftly, is translate her uncle’s memoir, offering incredible insight into his life and his illness, juxtaposed against the cultural and politics of the Bay Area in the late 60s and 70s and the state of American mental healthcare.
